Muslims to observe Lailat al Qadr

Muslims across the world will observe Lailat al Qadr, or the holy 'Night of Glory' marking the revelation of the holy Quran to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
Lailat al Qadr is viewed as one of the most significant religious occasions for Muslims as special prayer rituals and services are held on the eves of the last ten odd days of the fasting month of Ramadan.

The Qur'an says that this night is better than a thousand months (97:3), and that on this night the angels descend to earth.

Muslims believe the Holy Quran was revealed to Prophet Mohammad on one of these nights and that it holds a special spiritual power for those who open their hearts. They hold vigils until dawn and recite the Quran, as well as a variety of supplications signifying the greatness of the Creator and pleading for his forgiveness and blessings.

Whoever establishes the prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards (not to show off) then all his past sins will be forgiven. Hadith, Bukhari Vol 1, Book 2:34

What is the Night of Power?

The Quran's 97th chapter treats the Night of Power exclusively: "In the name of God, the Beneficent the Merciful. Indeed, We sent it [the Holy Quran] down on the Night of Power. What will convey to you what the Night of Power is like! Better is the Night of Power than a thousand months; in that Night the angels and the Spirit descend; by the permission of their Lord for every affair. Peace it is, till the break of dawn."

It is not certain when the Night of Power occurs. Muslims are encouraged to seek out the night -- and the message of mercy found in it -- during the last 10 days of Ramadan. However, many Muslim countries, including Turkey, designate a set night as Laylat al-Qadr, usually Ramadan 27. The traditions of the Prophet Muhammad and the Holy Quran encourage Muslims to seek out God's forgiveness on the night that is the anniversary of the start of the sacred text's revelation.

A special dua, or supplication, that the Prophet taught Muslims to use during the last 10 days of Ramadan -- as there is no exact date for the Night of Power and Muslims only know that it will occur during one of the odd-numbered nights in this timeframe -- is frequently recited, "O God, verily you are forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me." (Recorded by Ahmad, Tirmidhi)
Shab-e-Qadr tonight

Muslims across the country today (Saturday) will observe the holy Shab-e-Qadr or Lailatul Qadr, the night when the first verses of the holy Quran were revealed to the Greatest Prophet, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), reports BSS.

According to the Holy Quran, the night is better than 1,000 months as the angels and the spirit descend therein, by the permission of Almighty Allah with all decrees.

This is one of the holiest and most blessed nights, which is likely to occur on one of the odd nights in the last ten days of Ramadan and most likely to be the 27th of the holy month.

The devout Muslims traditionally observe the occasion through nightlong special prayers, milad, Quran Khwani, religious discussions at mosques and in their houses on this holy night.

Thousands of Muslim devotees also visit graveyards to seek eternal blessings for the departed souls of their near and dear ones.

The day is a public holiday.
Laylat al-Qadr

Laylat al-Qadr is celebrated every year in the Muslim world, but the date differs widely. All agree, however, that it occurs in the second half of the month of Ramadan.

Laylat al-Qadr, also known as Shab-e-Qadr, literally means the "Night of Decree" or "Night of Measures", and is the anniversary of two very important dates in Islam that occur during the month of Ramadan.

Muslims believe that it was on this night that God first sent down the first verses of the Qur'an via the Spirit of Revelation Gabriel, to Muhammad when he was forty years old. Other sources say that it is also the anniversary of the night in which the Qur'an was first communicated in its entirety to Muhammad.

The date on which the anniversary falls is a matter of debate. Sunni Muslims generally consider it to be either the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th of the month of Ramadan, while Shi'as consider it to be the 19th, 21st or 23rd of the month. Shi'as believe the 23rd to be the most important and 21st the least important of the three days.

Conventionally, most Sunnis celebrate it throughout the night of the 27th (i.e. the night between the 26th and 27th). However, due to the uncertainty of the exact date, Muslims are generally recommended to observe all the nights as a matter of precaution.

Mahedvis believe with certainty that its exactly the night of the 27th after the advent of Syed Mohammed Juanpuri, whom some Muslims (also the Zikris) see as the promised Mahdi.

Shia Muslims believe that their fate in the following year is decided on this night, and pray to God all night long, begging for mercy and salvation. This practice is called Ehyaa (the literal meaning of which is "revival").

Alteration of day and night

He causes the night to phase into the day and the day into the night, and He has subjected the sun and the moon, each running its course to an appointed term. That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs the Kingdom; but those whom you call upon, apart from Allah, possess not so much as the skin of a date-stone. 35:13

Golden Words Advised for Ramadhaan

Question: What words of guidance do you have for the Muslim ummah, on the occasion of the month of Ramadhaan?

Response: In the name of Allaah, all praise is to Allaah alone, and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and his family and his companions and whoever is guided (aright) by his guidance. To proceed: Certainly, concerning the approach of the blessed month of Ramadhaan, I advise my Muslim brethren everywhere to have taqwa of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic; to strive to do good deeds; to give sincere advice and be patient with the advice; to assist one another in good deeds and piety; to be cautious of all the sins Allaah has forbidden, wherever one may be, especially during this noble month – for indeed it is a great (precious) month, within which the reward for good actions is multiplied. Mistakes (sins) are forgiven during this month, for those who fast and perform voluntary prayers, with sincere faith and hoping to attain Allaah’s rewards.

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) said:

((Whoever fasts during the month of Ramadhaan, out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allaah’s rewards, then all his previous sins will be forgiven)).

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) also said:

((When the month of Ramadhaan starts, the gates of the Heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained)).

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) also said:

((Fasting is a shield or protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarrelling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, “I am fasting”)).

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) also said (on the authority of Allaah):

((All the deeds of the son of Aadam are for for himself; a good deed is eqaul to ten times it’s equivalent except fasting, for certainly it is for Me, and I will give the reward for it. He left his desires, his food, his drink for My sake. There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord. The unpleasant smell coming from the mouth of a fasting person is more pleasant to Allaah than the smell of musk)).

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) used to announce the good news of the arrival of the month of Ramadhaan to his companions, and would say to them:

((The month of Ramadhaan has come to you. It is the month of blessings. During this month, Allaah sends down mercy, ones mistakes are forgiven, supplications are answered and Allaah praises you in the presence of His angels, so show Allaah your virtues. For certainly the unfortunate individual is he who is prohibited from the mercy of Allaah)).

The Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) said:

((One who does not abandon evil talk and actions, then Allaah is not in need of him abandoning his food and drink (i.e. his fasting))).

And (such) narrations regarding the superiority of Ramadhaan and striving to increase good deeds in it, are many.

Therefore, I advise my Muslim brethren to be sincere and upright during the days and the nights, and to compete in doing all good deeds. And from amongst these (good deeds) are: To increase in reading the Noble Qur.aan, with understanding and contemplation. And to increase in glorifying Allaah [subhaan-Allaah] (at-Tasbeeh), prasing Allaah [al-Hamdu-Lillaah] (at-Tahmeed), declaring none truly worthy of worship except Allaah [Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah] (at-Tahleel), declaring the greatness of Allaah [Allaahu Akbar] (at-Takbeer), and seeking forgiveness from Allaah [Astaghfi-rullaah] (al-Istighfaar), and to ask Allaah for Paradise, seeking His protection from the Hell fire and all (other) good supplications.

I also advise my Muslim brethren to increase in giving charity during this month; to comfort the poor and destitute; to make (every) effort to deduct the Zakaah (from one’s wealth) and distribute it amongst the deserving; to make (every) effort in inviting to (the path of) Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala) and teaching those unacquainted (with Islaam); to command the good and forbid the evil with gentleness, wisdom and the best of manners; to warn against all evil and adhere to seeking sincere repentance, according to Allaah’s saying:

{…and all of you beg Allaah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful}, [Soorah an-Noor, Aayah 31].

And the saying of Allaah:

{Verily those who say: ‘Our Lord is (only) Allaah,’ and thereafter Istaqamu (i.e. stood firm and straight on the Islaamic Faith of Monotheism by abstaining from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which Allaah has forbidden and by performing all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained), – On them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. Such shall be the dwellers of Paradise, abiding therein (forever), – a reward for what they used to do}, [Soorah al-Ahqaaf, Aayah's 13-14].

May Allaah grant everyone success in that which pleases Him and protect everyone from the temptations which misguide and all satanic enticement. For certainly Allaah is generous and kind.

The son of such and such a person has presented this gift in your majestic court”.

Hadith 1

Hadith 5

Sayyiduna Abu Talha (radi Allahu anhu) narrates that he once entered the Court of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and noticed that the Habeeb of Almighty Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) was in a state of great joy and happiness. When he inquired as to the reason for this, Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) replied that, “Why should I not be happy and joyous? At this very moment Sayyiduna Jibra’el Ameen (alaihis salaam) has brought me a message. Almighty Allah has declared, ‘O Muhammad! Are you not pleased with this, that if any of your followers sends a single Durood upon you, I and My Angels (Malaa’ikah) send ten blessings upon that person, ten of his sins are pardoned and ten good deeds are recorded in his favour. He who sends Salaams upon you, I send Salaams upon him, so therefore, notify your Ummah of this good news and tell them that it is now left to them to either increase or decrease the recital of the Durood Shareef’”. *Some Common Mistakes in Ramadaan

*Lets Strive Not to Repeat the Same.*

*1 : Taking Ramadaan as a ritual*

For many of us Ramadaan has lost its spirituality and has become more of a ritual than a form of Ibaadah We fast from morning to night like a zombie just because everyone around us is fasting too. We forget that its a time to purify our hearts and our souls from all evil....we forget to make
dua, forget to beseech Allaah to forgive us and ask Him to save us from the Fire. Sure we stay away from food and drink but that's about all.

Although the Prophet (Sall Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said:

“Jibreel said to me, May Allaah rub his nose in the dust, that person to who Ramadaan comes and his sins are not forgiven, and I said, Ameen. Then he said, May Allaah rub his nose in the dust, that person who lives to see his parents grow old, one or both of them, but he does not enter Paradise (by not serving them) and I said, Ameen.
Then he said, May Allaah rub his nose in the dust, that person in whose presence you are mentioned and he does not send blessings upon you, and I said, Ameen.’”

(Tirmidhi, Ahmad, others. Saheeh by al-Albaani)

*2 : Too much stress on food and drink** *

For some people, the entire month of Ramadaan revolves around food. They spend the ENTIRE day planning, cooking, shopping and thinking about only food, instead of concentrating on Salaah, Quraan and other acts of worship. All they can think of is FOOD. So much so that they turn the month of fasting into the month of feasting. Come Iftaar time, their table is a sight to see, with the multitudes and varieties of food, sweets and drinks. They are missing the very purpose of fasting, and thus, increase in their greed and desires instead of learning to control them. It is also a kind of waste & extravagance.

".....and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allaah) likes not Al-Musrifoon (those who waste by extravagance) " [al-Araaf :31]

*3 : Spending all day cooking** *

Some of the sisters (either by their own choice or forced by their husbands) are cooking ALL day and ALL night, so that by the end of the day, they are too tired to even pray Ishaa, let alone pray Taraweeh or Tahajjud or even read Quraan. This is the month of mercy and forgiveness. So turn off that stove and turn on your Imaan!

*4 : Eating too much*

Some people stuff themselves at Suhoor until they are ready to burst, because they think this is the way to not feel hungry during the day and some people eat at Iftaar, like there is no tomorrow, trying to make up for the food missed. However, this is completely against the Sunnah. Moderation is the key to everything.

The Prophet (Sall Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach; for the son of Adam a few mouthfuls are sufficient to keep his back straight. If you must fill it, then one-third for food, one-third for drink and one-third for air." (Tirmidhi, Ibn Maajah. saheeh by al-Albaani).

Too much food distracts a person from many deeds of obedience and worship, makes him lazy and also makes the heart heedless.
It was said to Imam Ahmad: Does a man find any softness and humility in his heart when he is full? He said, I do not think so.

*5 : Sleeping all day*

Some people spend their entire day (or a major part of it) sleeping away their fast. Is this what is really required of us during this noble month? These people also are missing the purpose of fasting and are slaves to their desires of comfort and ease. They cannot bear to be awake and face a little hunger or exert a little self-control. For a fasting person to spend most of the day asleep is nothing but, negligence on his part.

*6 : Wasting time*

The month of Ramadaan is a precious, precious time, so much so that Allaah calls this month "Ayyamum Madoodaat" (A fixed number of days). Before we know it, this month of mercy and forgiveness will be over. We should try and spend every moment possible in the worship of Allaah so that we can make the most of this blessing. However, there are some of us who waste away their day playing video games, or worse still, watching TV, movies or even listening to music. Subhaan Allaah! Trying to obey Allaah by DISOBEYING him!

*7 : Fasting but not giving up evil*

Some of us fast but do not give up lying, cursing, fighting, backbiting, etc. and some of us fast but do not give up cheating, stealing, dealing in haraam, buying lotto tickets, selling alcohol, fornication, etc. and all kinds of impermissible things without realizing that the purpose of fasting
is to not stay away from food and drink; rather the aim behind it is to fear Allaah.

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)” [al-Baqarah 2:183]

The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, and ignorance, Allaah has no need of him giving up his food and drink." (Bukhaari)

*8 : Smoking*

Smoking is forbidden in Islam whether during Ramadaan or outside of it, as it is one of al-Khabaaith (evil things). And this includes ALL kinds of smoking material eg.cigars, cigarettes, pipes, sheesha, hookah etc."he allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat (all good and lawful things), and prohibits them as unlawful Al Khabaa'ith (all evil and unlawful things) [al-Araaf :157]

It is harmful, not only to the one smoking, but also to the ones around him. It is also a means of wasting ones wealth. The Prophet (Sall Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "There should be no harming or reciprocating harm. ”This is especially true during fasting and it invalidates the fast. (Fatwa-Ibn Uthaymeen)

*9 : Skipping Suhoor** *

The Prophet (Sall Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Eat suhoor for in suhoor there is blessing."(Bukhaari, Muslim).

And he (Sall Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "The thing that differentiates between our fasting and the fasting of the People of the Book is eating suhoor." (Muslim)

*10 : Not fasting if they missed Suhoor*

Some people are too scared to fast if they miss Suhoor. However, this is a kind of cowardice and love of ease. What is the big deal if you missed a few morsels of food? Its not like you will die. Remember, obedience to Allaah overcomes everything.

*11 : Delaying breaking fast** *

Some people wait until the adhaan finishes or even several minutes after that, just to be on the safe side. However, the Sunnah is to hasten to break the fast, which means breaking fast whenever the adhaan starts, right after the sun has set. Aaishah (RA) said: This is what the Messenger of Allaah (Sall Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to do. (Muslim).

The Prophet (Sall Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "The people will continue to do well so long as they hasten to break the fast." (Bukhaari, Muslim) Determine to the best of your ability, the accuracy of your clock, calendar, etc. and then have tawakkul on Allaah and break your fast exactly on time.

*12 : Eating continuously until the time for Maghrib is up*

Some people put so much food in their plates when breaking their fast and continue eating, enjoying dessert, drinking tea, etc., until they miss Maghrib. That is obviously not right. The Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) was that once he broke his fast with some dates, them he would hasten to the prayer. Once you are done with the prayer, you can always go back and eat some more if you wish.

*13 : Missing the golden chance of having your Dua accepted*

The prayer of the fasting person is guaranteed to be accepted at the time of breaking fast.

The Prophet (SallAllaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Three prayers are not rejected: the prayer of a father, the prayer of a fasting person, and the prayer of a traveler." (al-Bayhaqi, saheeh by al-Albaani).

Instead of sitting down and making Dua at this precious time, some people forego this beautiful chance, and are too busy frying samosas, talking, setting the food, filling their plates and glasses, etc. Think about it....Is food more important than the chance to have your sins forgiven or the fulfillment of your Duas.

*14 : Fasting but not praying*

The fasting of one who does not pray WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. This is because not praying constitutes kufr as the Prophet (Sall Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Between a man and shirk and kufr there stands his giving up prayer."(Muslim)

*15 : Not fasting because of exams or work*

Exams or work is NOT one of the excuses allowed by the Shariah to not fast. You can do your studying and revision at night if it is too hard to do that during the day. Also remember that pleasing and obeying Allaah is much more important than good grades. Besides, if you will fulfil your obligation to fast, even if you have to study, Allaah will make it easy for you and help you in everything you do.

"Whosoever fears Allah, He will appoint for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect, Allah is Sufficient for whosoever puts his trust in Him." (Surah at-Talaaq 2-3)

*16 : Mixing fasting and dieting*

DO NOT make the mistake of fasting with the intention to diet. That is one of the biggest mistakes some of us make (esp. sisters). Fasting is an act of worship and can only be for the sake of Allah alone.

*17 : Praying ONLY on the night of the 27th*

Some people pray ONLY on the 27th to seek Lailat ul-Qadr, neglecting all other odd nights, although the Prophet (Sall Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Seek Lailat ul-Qadr among the odd numbered nights of the last ten nights of Ramadaan." (Bukhaari, Muslim).

*18 : Wasting the last part of Ramadaan preparing for **Eid*

Some people waste the entire last 10 days of Ramadaan preparing for Eid, shopping and frequenting malls, etc. neglecting Ibadah and Lailatul Qadr. although, the Prophet (Sall Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to strive the hardest during the last ten days of Ramadaan in worship (Ahmad, Muslim) and not in shopping. Buy whatever you need for Eid *before *Ramadaan so that you can utilize the time in Ramadaan to the max.

Aaishah (RA) said: “When the (last) ten nights began, the Messenger of Allaah (Sall Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam)) would tighten his waist-wrapper (i.e., strive hard in worship or refrain from intimacy with his wives), stay awake at night and wake his family.” (Bukhaari and Muslim).

The Blessings of Ramadan

Disclaimer: Any mistakes are due to my own short comings, please do not attribute

***

The nights and days of Ramadan are for a believer to make up for the time he/she may have lost during the year.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has placed specific mercies in specific times and we must try and be aware of these times and make the most of them.

Summary of Hadith:

Once the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) was with his companions and about to climb the mimbar. When he took the first step Gibreel (alaihi salam) came to him and said:
“whoever enters the month of Ramadan and is not forgiven, then may Allah distance him.”
He asked the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) to say ameen and he did.
When the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) took the second step Gibreel (alaihi salam) said “whoever spends time with his parents until they reach old age, and if his servitude to them does not become a means for his salvation and entry to Paradise, then may Allah distance him.” Again he asked the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) to say ameen and he did.
When he (Sallallahu alahi wa sallam) took the third step up Gibreel (alaihi salam) again said “whoever hears your name being mentioned and does not send salawat on you, may Allah distance him.” Again he asked the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) to say ameen.

Facts about Ramadan:

There has never been a better month for the believer than it and never been a worst month for the hypocrite than Ramadan.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala writes the reward for it for the believer even before the servant enters Ramadan. This is due to his intention of doing good in it.

A believer must schedule oneself in advance to take the maximum benefit of its blessings.

This month is booty for the believer and a sin for the hypocrite.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala made it obligatory on the believers out of mercy for them so that they could make up for what they had lost of opportunities in life.

He replaced the hardships like hunger and abstinence from pleasures with subtle kindness and mercy.

Only those blessed with a portion of belief (Iman) fast in this month.

Elaboration on the ayah of Surah Baqara - “Kutiba a’laikumus Siyamu kama kutiba a’lalladheen min qablikum la’allakum tattaqoon ayyamam ma’doodat”

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala out of His mercy didn’t say ‘Allah has ordained for you fasting’, instead He said ‘Fasting was ordained for you’. This is because He did not want His servants to feel burdened by the weight of responsibility in obeying His direct command.

In order to make it easy He reminds that it was also ordained upon the nations before this nation.

He then concludes the ayah with the reminder of the fruit of fasting – attainment of Taqwa.

Again out of His mercy in order to make it appear easy for the believers He did not say the exact amount of days i.e. whole month that one has to fast but said ‘a number of days’.

Then He Subhanahu wa Ta’ala specifies those people who are allowed not to fast.

We should strive to perceive the blessings and virtues of Ramadan. We should take the opportunity and fill our time with worship.

The reward for a single good deed in Ramadan is increased to 70 times the normal reward. This gift was not given to previous nations.

In a Hadith from Abu Huraira through Imam al Bayhaqi, the Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam mentions 5 specific gifts his Ummah was given in this month, not given to previous nations

1) In the first night of Ramadan Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala gazes upon His servants, and on whom the Gaze falls upon will be forgiven forever and blessed with a life of extreme felicity. So what should be the state of a slave on that night in order to attain the Gaze of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala?

- Be kind to parents

- Maintain ties of kinship

- Have mercy towards fellow Muslims

- Remove all rancour and anger from heart

- Refrain from haram

- Be in worship the first night and beseech Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala.

If Allah’s Gaze falls upon you that first night, you have nothing to worry about after that.

2) The odour that comes out of the mouth of a fasting person is more beloved to Allah than the smell of musk.

3) There are angels that seek forgiveness for a fasting person the entire day until he breaks his fast. It is amazing how there are angels allocated specifically for a fasting person to seek forgiveness for him.

4) In the first night of Ramadan, the doors of Heaven are flung open and Allah asks it to adorn itself for those who will one day come to it to rest.

5) The last night of Ramadan Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala forgives the people of faith. The Companions (RadiAllahu anhum) asked whether the night was Laylatul Qadr. The Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said no, then said - do you remember how a labourer gets his wages at the end of day? This night is when those fasting get their wages from Allah.

Some other blessings:

- Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala places devils in shackles and throws them in to the sea. According to one opinion, only the minor devils remain. These are those that can be easily overcome by a believer. And the Nafs A’mmara remains which can be overcome through fasting.

- The first part of Ramadan – Rahma

Middle – Forgiveness

Last – Emancipation from Fire

- Every night 60000 are freed from Fire. In the last night of Ramadan, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala frees slaves equivalent to the sum of what was freed beginning from the first day.

- For every act of good deed, the reward is increased 10-70 times. Except fasting, the reward lies exclusively with Allah.

- If Allah accepts one day of fasting then know that the servant will have Husn al Khatima (a good ending).

- A good deed may be wiped out by angels due to sins committed by a person. But not the good deed of fasting because it is written exclusively with Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala as it is a good deed that a person does for Allah only, forsaking food and drink and other ease.

- A believer should look forward to two types of happiness:

Happiness when he breaks his fast as he has succeeded in fulfilling an act of worship and obedience to Allah

Happiness when he meets his Lord.

Description of the fruits in Paradise:

The fruits in Paradise need not be picked by climbing up a tree or doing something similar. Just gazing at them and wishing to eat them will cause the branch laden with fruits to bow down towards you so you will be able to pick the fruits. When plucked, Allah will replace it with one of more superior quality in its place. When the believer eats the fruit, the whole body will experience its deliciousness and with every bite the tastiness of the fruit will increase. When the believer eats to his full and is satiated, the food will melt away and leave one in a sweat which will give out noor and a beautiful fragrance like musk. Then the tree will straighten up again.

Birds of Paradise:

Just by looking at a bird and desiring to eat it will cause it to be laid out in a silver platter. When the believer finishes eating it will gather itself up and become an even more beautiful bird and fly away.

Similarly desiring to drink something from the different rivers of Paradise will cause the drink to be given to the person in a golden goblet.

All this and much more will be the reward for forsaking of food and drink in the life of duniya during fasting

Some acts in Ramadan:

- By standing in the night in prayer, we try to show Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala that we love Him. According to a hadith we must show Allah the good things that we can do for Him.

- According to another hadith, Allah made fasting obligatory during the day and the Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam made standing in prayer a Sunnah during the night.

- Whoever fasts in faith and sincerity will come out like a newborn baby. Thus Ramadan purifies one totally so it is a chance one should not let pass by.

- We must also develop the habit of wanting good for our brothers in faith and humanity.

- Every night in Ramadan two angels come out. One says “O the one coming for khair (good) move forward!” and the other says “O who wishes shar (mischief) Beware!”

- Four continuous acts one cannot do without in Ramadan:

Remembrance of Shahada

Istighfar

Asking of Jannah

Seeking refuge from Fire

- As the night of Laylatul Qadr is ambiguous, u’lama say one should make these supplications every night in Ramadan

- Ramadan is a school where one is trained to do all things pleasing to Allah and to leave all things despised by Allah. E.g. practice of

Ikhlas

Muraqaba

Scheduling of time

Controlling of tongue

- Controlling tongue especially important – if someone comes with the intention to fight then say “I am fasting”.

- One should not be among a group that curse or gossip

- Ramadan especially teaches one how to schedule one’s time. A believer is always covetous of his time and his actions.

- Ramadan is a month that puts a believer in a state of increased trust with Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala.

- Acts which people find hard to do in normal times e.g. fasting, tilawa, controlling tongue and dhikr, are able to do it in Ramadan. This proves that one can actually undertake these acts outside Ramadan as well if one has the conviction.

- Ramadan teaches us trust and confidence in ourselves.

- How Ramadan is made easy:

If one tries to understand the stories and news given in Quran, then one can take heed from them and learn.

If we take the affair of Allah and His Messenger Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam seriously, Allah makes the month of Ramadan and all that is required in it, easy for us.

It teaches us that incorporation of good works through mutual cooperation will make them easier on us. In fact any affair done with mutual cooperation is made easy.

Ramadan teaches us that we are interacting with Allah and not with the people.
